One-way ANOVA compares the means of several groups by splitting total variation into variation between groups and variation within groups. The test statistic is the F-ratio, , where means mean square. Large between-group variation relative to within-group variation produces a large and evidence against the null hypothesis that all group means are equal. The alternative hypothesis states that at least one group mean differs from the others. The five assumptions are independent observations, normally distributed populations, equal population variances, random sampling, and a categorical factor with at least two levels.
