When we add whole numbers we line up the digits according to their place value: ones under ones, tens under tens, hundreds under hundreds, and so on. Each column is added separately, starting from the rightmost (the ones place). If a column’s sum reaches ten or more, we write down the remainder and carry the extra ten to the next column on the left. This “carry” is just moving one group of ten to the higher place value. By keeping the places aligned and handling any carries, we can find the total of any two whole numbers.
